Österreichisch-israelische Jugendbegegnung Spurensuche – Back to the Roots (30.6.–9.7.2019)

Zwischen 30. Juni und 9. Juli 2019 wird die österreichisch-israelische Jugendbegegnung Spurensuche – Back to the Roots in Österreich vom Verein GEDENKDIENST durchgeführt. Bis 20. März 2019 ist die Bewerbung zur Teilnahme für Jugendliche zwischen 18 und 25 Jahren möglich.

Ziel des Projektes ist es, den Austausch zwischen Jugendlichen aus Israel und Österreich zu fördern. Im Mittelpunkt dieser internationalen Begegnung steht die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Nationalsozialismus und dem Holocaust in Österreich in Form einer Studienfahrt. Die gemeinsame Projektsprache ist Englisch.  

10 engagierte junge Menschen aus Österreich sind eingeladen, sich mit 15 israelischen Jugendlichen auf eine herausfordernde internationale Begegnung einzulassen. Voraussetzung einer Teilnahme ist die Bereitschaft, sich tiefgehend mit der österreichischen Geschichte – familiengeschichtlich bis nationalstaatlich – zu beschäftigen sowie diese gemeinsam mit jungen Israelis in Verbindung zu israelischer und jüdischer Geschichte zu setzen. Wir wollen den TeilnehmerInnen in Vorträgen, Diskussionen und Exkursionen die Vielschichtigkeit von Geschichte und ihre Auswirkungen auf die Gegenwart – persönlich und gesellschaftlich – greifbar vermitteln. Dabei werden die Familienbiografien aller Gruppenmitglieder aus beiden Ländern thematisiert. Gemeinsam beschäftigen wir uns vor allem mit den Jahren 1938 bis 1945, aber sowohl die Vorgeschichte als auch die Nachwirkungen des Nationalsozialismus auf die Gesellschaften in Israel und Österreich sollen herausgearbeitet werden.

Back to the Roots – Spurensuche (30.6.–9.7.2019)

Call for Applications for 15 young people from Israel and 10 from Austria

The Israeli-Austrian youth exchange program Back to the Roots – Spurensuche, which is organized by the Austrian NGO GEDENKDIENST, an association for historical-political education, will take place in Austria between the 30^th of June and the 9^th of July 2019. You can apply for the program if you are in the age between between 18 and 25 years until the 20^th of March 2019. 

The aim of Back to the Rootsis to promote the exchange between young people from Israel and Austria. This international encounter is framed as a study trip about the aftermath of Nazism and the Holocaust in Austria today. The entire program will be held in English. We are looking for 15 young Israeliswith family connections to Austria who are willing to engage in a challenging confrontation with their family history in Austria during a youth exchange with 10 young Austrian participants. The requirements for the seminar are the willingness to be part of an in-depth investigation of Austrian history, starting from the own family roots up to Austrian society’s role in Nazism and Nazi crimes, as well as an exchange with young Austrians who are interested in investigating their own family traces and connections.

We want to discuss the complexity of history and its effects on the present both on a personal as well as a collective level by providing personal exchanges, workshops and lectures. Our dealing with the past will be based on the family biographies of all participants. The focus will be on the years 1938 to 1945, however the preconditions of Nazi persecution, the legacy of the Holocaust and its effects on Austrian and Israeli society will be discussed as well.
