Strategy Paper: Preventing Anti-Semitism through Education

The Austrian Ministry of Education and Austria’s Education Agency OeAD present Recommendations for the implementation of the national strategy against antisemitism for the Austrian educational administration and teacher training institutions.

In January 2021 the Austrian Federal Government adopted the National Strategy Against Antisemitism. The aim of the strategy is to “curb anti-Semitism in all its forms and to raise awareness for recognising everyday anti-Semitism.” 10 of the 38 measures described therein are related to education, science and research. Based on this, the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) and the OeAD, Austria’s Agency for Education and Internationalisation, have developed proposals and recommendations for the education administration, for teacher training and in-service training of teachers, and for the support of those affected in case of anti-Semitic incidents, and bundled them in a strategy paper.

This strategy paper provides concrete recommendations and proposed measures for the entire education administration. The OeAD supports the BMBWF in implementing these steps with its Holocaust education programme _erinnern.at_.

The strategy paper with recommendations is available here for download free of charge. It is addressed, together with concrete goals, to political decision-makers, relevant departments of the Ministry of Education, the education directorates, the teacher training colleges and teacher training institutions at universities and to school headmasters and headmistresses.

Regarding the qualification of teachers in pre- and in-service training the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) has funded a separate research project the results of which have also been included into the strategy paper: Link
