Artificial Intelligence is increasingly transforming how history is taught, communicated, and remembered. From AI-generated images and synthetic voices to chatbots and animated photographs, new technologies are reshaping the ways historical narratives are produced, interpreted, and contested across Europe.
The NECE Lab on AI and the Future of Historical Learning is bringing together educators, museum and memorial practitioners, tech and AI experts, researchers, and civic educators to critically explore the opportunities and risks AI presents for historical and civic education and remembrance work.
Taking place from 16 - 18 September 2026 in Salzburg, Austria, the Lab combines keynote inputs, workshops, breakout sessions, and hands-on exploration of the use of AI and technologies in historical learning. Participants will engage with questions surrounding authenticity, disinformation, digital historical consciousness, and the role of AI in shaping public memory.
The Lab is designed for teachers, tech and AI experts, educators in museums and memorial sites, and practitioners in non-formal education from across Europe who are interested in strengthening critical and reflective approaches to AI in their professional practice.
